RACHEL FEINSTEIN-THE SNOW QUEEN
I never need an excuse to visit my favorite building in NYC, but artist Rachel Feinstein has an installation in the lobby of the Lever House building, so I hit it. I think it has something to do with fairy tales, which kind of works in this modernist mecca...but I couldn't get in, so I didn't know what the hell was going on. The building itself stands alone as a work of art though.
SIGHTINGS: MEADOWS, ESTUARIES, RAVINES
Congratulations to Susan Mayr on her beautiful opening at Umbrella Arts last night. Ethereal paintings done in watercolor and walnut ink, casting a mellow spell over the brain (even in hectic gallery-opening scenarios)....my pics can't capture this, so please check it out in person.
WARHOL'S MOTION PICTURES
Almost slept on MoMA's ANDY WARHOL:MOTION PICTURES, which closes March 21st, but made a Sunday of it. Cinematic portraits are "hung" in the large, dark gallery and it's very silent and beautiful. Took some weird pics to try to explain it all, but that didn't really work out. Also caught Picasso's Guitars exhibit which was impressive and uncrowded for a Sunday. Alot of stuff going on at MoMA right now.
H.G. LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE
Excellent Friday night at Anthology, where Joe Bob Briggs and Frank Hennenlotter(Basket Case, Frankenhooker) presented the documentary H.G Lewis: The Godfather of Gore, to a crowd of weirdos and film lovers. Great doc on the life of one of the most groundbreaking directors of our time and a fun Q&A with Joe Bob and Mr. Hennenlotter. Good to see a lot of mutants came out for this one.
